NRW Efficiency Prize 2015 for High Temperature Corrosion Protection

Dörken MKS-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG, Herdecke has been awarded the NRW Efficiency Prize 2015 for its Delta-Heat® high temperature coating. NRW Minister of the Environment Johannes Remmel presented the coveted award to Managing Director Dr. Gerhard Reusmann and Head of Research Dr. Marcel Roth at the Zeche Zollverein in Essen on 21 October 2015. The coating was developed specifically for high temperature corrosion protection in steel processing.

The new coating system was created in co-operation with VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH and Walzwerken Einsal GmbH. The project budget for the development of the new product was funded proportionately by the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD) and state funding. Smelting and processing steel is an energy intensive process. In the heat treatment process material is also lost to high temperature corrosion and rejects. As a consequence, reducing so-called scale formation in the steel processing procedure can increase the amount of material and parts that can be used, thus significantly optimising the use of resources and energy, as well as costs for post processing. In order to reduce high temperature corrosion a protective coating is applied to the steel, which in the past typically contained solvents and toxic substances.

The goal of the product development was to achieve improved high temperature corrosion resistance with sustainable chemical action whilst at the same time increasing resource efficiency. The result is a new, water-based, fully solvent-free high performance system for coating steel, which can be used at temperatures of up to 1,200°C. Delta-Heat® also contains no volatile monomers and no toxic additives. The coating substance hardens at room temperature, with the result that there is a significant reduction in the thermal energy otherwise required for cross linking. The "green" system can also be applied to already corroded steel and can be recycled. The coating is sprayed, painted or poured on and already manifests its high performance at coating thicknesses of two to three micrometres.

The innovative coating can reduce material loss through high temperature corrosion by up to 80 percent and is a significant improvement compared to uncoated substrate. The new high temperature corrosion protection can be used in all heating and annealing processes for (stainless) steel. In this it lowers the reject rate and reduces the amount of time required for post processing, as well as limiting tool wear and ultimately enhancing product quality. These positive effects have already been confirmed in practical use at a rolling mill.
